Took my bike out for the second time over the weekend and was washing it off after getting home when I noticed this dent. I did take my first real spill (I’m fine, just a small bruise on my hip) at the beginning of the ride so I’m assuming that’s when this occurred.

Does this need to be replaced or is a dent like this fine? Thanks!

  1. Me personally? I’d keep riding it. It doesn’t look too bad, and on most frames, the seatstay doesn’t get a ton of force on it where the dent is.

But, the choice and risk are yours.

  2. Can’t tell if it is full suspension or not. Full suspension I would change the rear triangle. Rigid bike, I believe I should be fine (I mean I personally wouldn’t be dropping more than 1 mt out of caution)

Have it fixed!! stop forgetting we used to fix everything!! A willing machine shop/welding shop would have no issues repairing, welding in new, or sleeving that section.

I was hoping more people would lean one way or the other but I appreciate everyone’s opinions !

  5. The way the paint is spiderwebbing would have me pretty nervous – that means the tube got pretty deformed during the impact. I wouldn’t trust that.

  6. Getcha a TIG welder and go to town!

edit: It’s ok to down vote if you are scared of welding, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a very basic tube repair job.

  7. You are getting some shitty advice here. It’s a “flex stay”, that tube is designed to be get extra stress everytime your suspension moves through it’s travel. There is no way it’s going to hold up long term because it’s being actively stressed all the time.

It may hold for a while. But at some point it’s just going to snap and you might end up getting in a worse wreck and injuring yourself or damaging other parts of the bike.

Giant has a crash replacement program, take it in to your local shop and get things moving. OR buy a new rear end off the internet or get a different frame, or something.

    Is it aluminum?

If so, look to see if there js a crack or if there just damage to the paint.

Crack is bad. Abrasion to metal and paint is fine

The whole section could be replaced, from where that damaged piece meets the wheel all the way up to the other end…. grinding the welds down will allow you to pretty simply knock the piece off. You could cut a smaller section out around the damage and weld in what you removed… could then sleeve it if it seems questionable.

Sad to see this entire sub, collectively, has just given up on thinking altogether. Bro, I can SEE the crack. YOU can see the crack. Why do you ask this sub whether it’s toast?
