Felt a little sheepish for buying the Litelok X3. Thought it might be a bit overkill. But then was locking my bike up outside Bakar gym on the UCSF Mission Bay Campus and saw this on the ground.

Peace of mind is worth the money.

  1. I’m glad I read the post, because my initial assumption was that this photo was of your $350 lock after someone cut through it.

I am so thankful to live somewhere where I don’t need a 350 currency lock lol.

My lock is okay but my insurance is good. It also protects me from liability, medical, etc.

If my bike gets stolen I’ll use the insurance money to get a ride home and better one.

I’m not saying my method is better than yours, but I have total peace of mind.

Where the fuck do you live that thieves are just walking around with angle grinder

  5. You’re just buying time unfortunately, don’t get a false sense of security cause you spent more. Still use good practices where you can.

Any lock can be defeated with enough time even a 350 dollar one.

The only thing that could ever put an end to bike theft is when there is nothing to gain from stealing a bike. Until then, you can only minimize your risk. An effective lock on a secure object is about all you can do.

I’ve also found anti-theft skewers to be extremely effective. I have a folding lock (better than cable, not as good as a high end U lock), and have left my bike out all day while I’m at work in a high-theft area of the city and it’s been fine.

I imagine for would-be thieves who recognize them, they reduce the value of the bike for resale, because you can’t take them apart to repair a flat without the special key.

  8. I heard that there were a lot of Bike thefts at the Ucsf area. I park at Parnassus and use the Hiplok DX1000 , and yeah, it’s the strongest lock I’ve ever seen anyone have out and about, but I definitely think it’s worth it especially if you don’t pay for a bike insurance.

I had a kryptonite orange (mid tier) lock for years on my rubbish urban bike, with no problem.
The we bought a cargo bike, pretty expensive so I choose a litelock x1, which is according to test about 5 or 10 time more robust comparing to my basic bike lock.
I was « meh ok », probably robust but there is probably a lot of marketing here. Still, it’s an expensive bike so I won’t be cheap on this.

Recently, someone stole my keys and I had to cut my original kryptonite to keep my bike usable (lost the spare keys a long time ago).

I did it with a angle grinder in about 30 freaking seconds.

Si I bought another litelok as it will discourage thieves with to doubt.

Yes, go big or go home, even on a cheap bike : it’s worthiness is in the help it give you, not only his price.

  10. Using Alterlock + chainlock combo myself.
The Alterlock gives alarm to my phone when something shaky is going on with my bike.

Last time it was a very curious dog that set the alarm off.
