The day starts with a gumball machine that looks like it hasn’t worked since the Cold War. We put in twenty cents anyway. Out comes a plastic egg. Inside the egg: a ring. Wim drops to one knee like this was the plan all along. I say yes before he finishes the sentence. It’s not gold. It’s not silver. But it’s perfect, and it stays on.

We accidentally cycle straight through a hunters’ protest, complete with hunting horns and very serious trousers. A 75‑year‑old man on an e‑bike rescues us from the chaos and turns into a high‑speed city guide who talks faster than we can pedal.

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, we find an ice‑cream vending machine and decide that dessert is a perfectly acceptable lunch. Later, we ride on top of a dam, surrounded by flowers in colors that feel slightly excessive.

We end the day camping on a Rhine beach, shaded by olive trees, watching cargo ships slide past and one cruise ship that clearly took a wrong turn from the Nile.

  1. Goeie middag jullie beiden.
    Groetjes JJ& Anja

  2. This is so random, yet so meaningful to your relationship and ride. This ring and this story, should definitely go down family history for the future generations to know.
