Cycle Day 24: Lutherstadt Wittenberg to Potsdam (Germany). 72km (322vm). We dodged nearly all of the showers as roads were wet. Caught a little sprinkle but hardly got us wet. Taking a small detour as we left Lutherstadt Wittenberg took us past a rather interesting school. Our ride today was mainly straight north, only slightly undulating and mainly along Berliner Strasse. Cycle way beside the road and occasionally on the road. More broad agriculture including some large areas of asparagus and potatoes. The beauty of cycling – got to see a badger snuffling along in the ditch beside our cycle path. Majority of the ride almost all the way into Potsdam was through forests. Fortunately, able to check in to our hotel a little early. Then off to catch a tram into Potsdam. Some food, drink fest on in the square. The Potsdam Brandenburg Gate, walk through the gardens of Sanssouci Palace (“Palace without worry”). Terraced vineyards. Built as a summer Palace for Frederick the Great (Prussian Empire) in 1745-47. Grave of the said Frederick with potatoes on it as a German tradition to thank him for introducing potatoes to Prussia – to become a traditional food of Germans. Great meal in a German restaurant, then a huge thunderstorm broke as we headed for our tram & bus home. Small shelter found in a doorway and glad when the tram came. Very crowded with others running from the storm. Thunder & lightning & really heavy rain. Changed to a bus that fortunately took us to within 200m of our hotel. Glad that storm didn’t hit while we were riding. Staying here for 3 nights to explore Berlin. Hoping to cycle some of the Berlin Wall on Sunday and on Monday as we leave Potsdam.
Day 24 of 7 weeks cycling the 2400km from south coast to north coast in Europe and a little bit extra.
