Hey folks—I picked up a 1987 Fuji Tivoli for cheap recently. My goal was to use the wheels and groupset for another project, which worked well with the exception of the crankset. The frame is Tange chromoly in this great miami vice color scheme, and I'm hoping to turn it into a single speed beater for shitty weather.

Here's my problem—

The bike was definitely knocked over onto the non-drive side at least once if not several times, and the threads to the left crank are damaged to the point of not being able to thread a crank puller. I'm posting here to see if there is a known fix. The crank and bottom bracket are getting discarded after so nothing needs to be preserved—even extreme solutions are welcome.

So do I try to chase the threads? Do I take out the opposite bottom bracket shell and try to pound out the spindle? Do I fall to my knees in the street screaming "why god why"?

Let me know in the comments and thank you in advance 🙂

If you arent looking to salvage the crank arm you can use a dremel cutting disc (cost like £30 on amazon) and make a relief cut to remove the crank arm

Did it 2 days ago on a seized Shimano Alivio on a GT Outpost Trail bottom bracket, tried loads of other stuff but this worked

Years ago I used a pickle fork and a microfiber towel to pry off stuck crank arms.

  3. I think it’s all toast, I would try a 2 jaw puller or a bearing puller.

If that doesn’t work, loosen the bb and hammer the square taper out.

You can try riding around like this a bit see if the crank loosens by itself. Lubricant could help.

Otherwise I would cut the crank off.

  5. Saw it off. If you do it by hand you will need a decent size hacksaw with a new blade and the alloy will be medium hardness so it will take several minutes of work.

You can use a 2 or 3 jaw bearing puller. Put some tension on it and let it sit overnight stressed. take a mallet and hammer the crankarm back on (counterintuitive, but it helps break it loose). Repeat with puller. Wear safety glasses and stand clear. it can shoot across the roomm

  7. Pickle fork is the answer but go slow and careful not to put your face/head in the way (ask me how I know this)
