The dam was built between 1913 and 1917 and is about 50 meters long. It owes its name to the former amusement park Palmengarten. Nearby is the Palmengarten and to the south is the Clara Zetkin Park. It is an extensive park where you can appreciate nature and enjoy the beginning of autumn with its falling leaves and changing colors.
The Palmengarten is a technical monument. Nevertheless, it is still fully functional and fulfills important flood protection tasks for the city of Leipzig.
