Two different triples converted to doubles, lots of experimenting with bottom bracket widths, but they both work and shift between the chainrings. Albeit not incredibly fast.
First is a Sakae SX with 48t big ring, 26t small ring with 9 speed friction.
Second is Sugino with a 40t big ring and 24t small ring with 8 speed friction

Now we need a video of the shifting. This is peak x biking stuff
Maybe the first time or the only time that someone’s made a 48 and 40t look like dinner plates. I love this.Â
Shifting would be improved by moving the big chainring to the inside position, but i must say it looks nice 🙂
Prime prime prime. Love it
I’ve made 48/28 a few years back. With friction bar end shifter was shifting beautifully.

In the days before giant cassette cogs were a thing I used 42/24 with a bash guard on an old Tiagra crankset. As long as you have a long cage derailleur it works great, and don’t require anything fancy like a clutch derailleur to keep the chain in line. The IRD 46/30 was the deliberate attempt at recreating that for a.. wider audience.
I ran 40/20 for a while and imho a deda dog fang is your friend…
Nice. I use a 40/26 and a 42/28
