But Stephen is Jewish and lost family members in the Holocaust, so can he salvage the music he loves from its dark association with anti-semitism and the Nazis? Shot on location in Germany, Switzerland and Russia, the film includes unique behind-the-scenes access to the Bayreuth Festival, the annual extravaganza of Wagner’s music held in the composer’s own purpose built theatre. Animated by Stephen Fry’s trademark wit and intelligence, and featuring a soundtrack of Wagner’s extraordinary music, this is a fantastic introduction to the life and legacy of one of the most important composers ever, and a must-see film for those who already know and love his music.

Adapted by Maximianno Cobra, from Shakespeare's "Timon of Athens", the film exposes the timeless challenge of social hypocrisy, disillusion and annihilation against the poetics of friendship, love, and beauty.

  2. Having listened to Brian Eno before he turned out to be an anti-semite, I kept listening. I mean, what's the point… But finding out that Wagner was a Jew hater actually kept me from entering his world.

  3. Wonderful documentary!!! Thanks so much to all the staff, particularly to Stephen!!! Just one detail: Daniel Baremboim is Argentine, also a tango lover. Congratulations and thank you again!!!

  4. love and respect Stephen Fry. I can't for love of Zeus find anything musical in this whole Wagner oops. Only sensles, useless dramatically overboarding noise.horrible at best

  5. Eva Wagner-Pasquier could barely stand Stephen Fry. I hope it was his smarminess and not his Jewishness. He is one of my heroes, and yet sometimes I think he lays it on pretty thick. Great documentary!

  6. When I started listening to classical music, I stayed away from Wagner for the longest time because of his anti-Semitism and the Nazi association with his music. Also I'm not really into opera. But I love the overtures. He's an amazing composer.

  7. Stephen Fry, "The person who was most hurt by his anti-Semitism was himself"

    Really?

Was Richard Wagner rounded up as part of a group of hundreds / thousands of Jews in Nazi occupied Poland or Russia, forced to stand at the edge of a pre-dug ditch then shot at point blank range in the back of the head?

Alternatively, was he transferred by train from ghettoised areas of WWII Nazi controlled European to a concentration camp, forced to remove his clothing (alongside his wife and children) whilst being herded into a 'sanitation shower', which turned out to be a tortuous, slow death gas chamber – followed by the snaking smoke of the mass-cremation plant?

I totally agree that wonderful art can be made by individuals whose viewpoints or behaviour we feel to be abhorrent – indeed at the deepest level I believe that all human beings are fundamentally / spiritually pure and perfect (including, self-evidently, Mr Wagner himself).

However what I find most confusing about the continuing cult of Wagner (including this Stephen Fry contribution) is the transformation of what I perceive to be self-evidently ugly and repellent strident and atonal sounds (and visuals re the operatic staging) that emerged from his racist / neo-pagan / social-Darwinian / anti-morality / power and violence worshipping / anti-spiritual stance into something enjoyable and wonderful.

For those who have fallen for the concept that Richard Wagner somehow represents the pinnacle of classical music I can only recommend explorations of the works of eg Beethoven, Max Bruch, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Mozart.

  8. I have enjoyed seeing aspects of productions that audiences don't usually see. I have been on a tour of the theatre, and have actually stood on the conductors podium in the pit – a great experience. I usually enjoy listening to Stephen Fry, however, most of the time his obsequious behaviour throughout the documentary is almost embarrassing to witness; Eva Wagner-Pasquier is quite dismissive of some of his comments. Nevertheless, it is an interesting documentary. The additional scenes are very good.

  9. Excellent documentary. I remember reading in Tommy Lascelles book about what his father said about Wagner,"Wagner? I could make as good music by slamming my bedroom door!" Which had me on the floor.

  10. What music, what voices. When I think of Wagner, I always think of two aspects, the music, which I love, and that he was a damn anti-semitist, which I hate, naturally. Lior Shambadal, whom I had the honor to meet during his time in Germany, was asked how a jewish conductor feels conducting Wagner. He said that he loved Wagner's music and does not really think about his social or political attitude. Well, since then I don't have a guilty conscience anymore listening to Wagner.

  11. I wonder if Stephen, realised that the Wagner family can never be separated from the ideals of the National Socialists, for Stephen to innocently interview Eva Wagner is to ignore that she knew exactly who he was, his sexual proclivity and his jewishness. Eva, was certainly named after the notorious German woman who was the companion of the most reviled German leader. The interview was awkward and sterile, and ashe was simply performing her diplomatic duty to the festival, by being courteous to a British film crew with connections to the BBC.

  12. I discovered Richard Wagner in a vacuum, far removed from his known place in history and  the collective imagination, in my grandparents' record collection as a kid. As I got older I read more extensively and discovered many of his troubling anti Semitic views, that he was anti Semitic cannot be argued but his musical dramas didn't allude to this skewed viewpoint and in fact actually explored themes of greed, power, ect issues our civilization still grapples with to this day and because of that will hopefully  transcend and perpetuate for future generations of music lovers. The imaginative scope of his work is breath taking and based on the themes of the content timeless and universal. It is the music that will always survive the mortal man. Great documentary, thank you for exploring the subject. I have personally reconciled my love for Wagner with his rather poisoned views of race ect and hope others will too. The work speaks for itself.

  13. Good video. Enjoyed it. From what I've read, Wagner's article on Jews in Music/art, in which he attacks Meyerbeer, Heine, and Mendelssohn, wasn't initially as influential or praised amongst racists as some people think it was, though very hateful, nonetheless.

  14. His magical thinking, as evidenced by his compulsion to touch every little thing that might be infused with some sort of "aura", is very human and at the same time a bit disconcerting to watch.
