Nostradamus is one of the most recognized names in Western history yet the man behind the legend remains largely unknown. Born in the south of France in 1503, Michel de Nostredame spent the first half of his life as a physician and plague doctor, moving through towns devastated by disease, losing his own family to illness, and building a reputation for practical medicine at a time when medicine itself was still largely guesswork.
It was only in his later years, after settling in Salon-de-Provence and achieving a modest financial stability, that he turned to writing producing the almanacs and the vast collection of prophetic quatrains that would come to bear his Latinized name into perpetuity. Since their publication in the 1550s, his Prophecies have rarely been out of print. They have been applied to the Great Fire of London, the French Revolution, the rise of Hitler, the Kennedy assassination, and the attacks of September 11th. They continue to be applied to events unfolding today.
This documentary examines the full arc of his life the obscure origins, the medical career, the intellectual world of Renaissance France, and the actual construction of the Prophecies themselves before turning to the question that has occupied readers for nearly five centuries: what, if anything, did Nostradamus actually foresee?
