During one of the longest days of the UK Summer, Tony and I joined Velo 29 to Cycle from Seascale on the West Coast of England to Whitby on the East Cost, traversing an iconic route with some spectacular terrain, scenery and climbs – all in single ride. Alongside 200 other riders, we’d hoped for a nice little summer adventure, but instead we encountered a biblical storm on one of the most demanding sections of the route, including Hardnott Pass and Wrynose Pass in the Lake District and over the hours gradually transitioned into the sunshine and fish & chips of Whitby ! This all made for an incredible challenge and a beautiful and contrasting film. I hope you enjoy!!

  1. Chapeau! Those super steep climbs in the Lakes in those conditions look impossible. How did you keep traction? And the Yorkshire Dales…, I cycled to Whitby from York, so just a quarter or third of your ride, and it’s was windy – always is there, I think – and so attritional. But the dish and chips at the end made it worthwhile!

  2. That looked brutal Phil. Finally got a road bike, a 2025 Scott Addict RC 10! Tour de Brisbane is my first Grand Fondo riding it. Should be a great. 110km with 1200m ish of climbing in April. Hope you pulled up well after this ride. The voice sounded a tad crook by the end. That weather! Wow. Glad you didn’t hurt yourself in that crash mate. Anyway, well done to you and TC. Bet those fish and chips went down well.

  3. Your technical riding skills are amazing! Now you know how Cows feel art those Cattle Guards. Too much power to the steel beams can cause overspin. All of your FTP improvements caught up with you. 👍👍👏👏

  4. Crazy stuff Phil. Kudos to you for completing it. I don’t think BC will use your footage to showcase the beauty of cycling in the UK 😅 the first part was an horror show 😅 not sure where you found the strength but you got paid back with sunshine at the end!! Bravo!

  5. Immense effort. Hardknott Pass plus headwind plus that amount of rain looks almost impossible. Even with a crash you made it look (I won't say easy) but comfortable. Looks like an awesome day out though. Really well done.

  6. Starting weather wasn’t too appealing but rest was good. Epic ride well done. I usually just download these routes and do them on a nice day but have entered the Yorkshire struggle (may), dragon devil (June) and Dartmoor classic (July) this year so just praying for dry conditions.

  7. Hi Phil! Cool video. That part where the road turned into a river was really impressive to watch 🌊🚴‍♀🏊
And at the end you didn’t even look very tired — after 50 climbs and all that rain 😅
