Welcome to Grassroots, a series of short films about UK bike racing. Portsdown is a Nat B road race in Hampshire that is 72km and takes place on the first weekend of February. i wanted to have a bit of a deeper look into the world of grassroots bike racing in the UK so turned up with a few cameras and absolutely no idea what we were going to get, i just wanted to capture the spirit of British Road Racing and tell some stories.
I tell you know, its super hard to makes these when youre just out there solo shooting out the window of a car.
Big thanks for Seb and British Cycling for helping me pull this together and anyone who dropped over footage. If youd like to see more of these style of short storytelling pieces then let me know as i have a few other events we’re going to shoot at.
My goal is to try help the British Bike Racing scene if i can and this is the first step in doing that.

Keep these coming 😁
I've seen people (rarely) give you stick sometimes in comments but please remember what you are doing for the sport at an amateur level with your vlogs and especially with an amazing video of this quality. You are covering something we love and yet something that can be harder and harder for us to view due to subscription tv. You are also showcasing the incredible talent and bravery of these riders. The level must be so high now with coaches, zwift, supplements and diet, etc.
Yes Max!! Absolutely loved this. Great documentary vibes show casing brilliant young talent and what the British racing scene is about. Definitely a positive message of what they do looking forward to more of this.
First class film Max. You’ve got a talent.
Such a horrible race 😢
Great video Max!! 👏👏👏 Doing more for British Cycling than British Cycling 😂
Perfs pedal as was, lots of big winners in past, few tt'ers won Yates,Stevens, Dowsett
Brilliant Max, great to see such quality coverage of a UK event. Thank you
Fantastic film and a fantastic mission. Great stuff Max.
Up north we always had the Clayton Spring Classic as our season opener, down there it was always the Perfs first followed by the March Hare – those races were a good barometer as to who had good legs for the season ahead & how much work you needed to put in to get your race legs back. I know a few lads who used to do the Perfs back in the day & I remember them all saying it was a brutally hard race.
sick video mate, some real nasty power in that race 😂
Nice video to see what's going on in the high end road racing scene.
I still cannot get over the fact that cas are allowed on the course albeit in the other direction. It’s so unbelievably dangerous and putting in unnecessary risks. As if the sport isn’t dangerous enough already.
What an excellent mini-doc!!
Chapeau Max 😎📽️🚲
Production on another level 🥶🥶🥶🥶🔥🔥🔥🔥 let’s roll 🎉👏
How sick are Handsling 🔥🌶️
Class video and production Max,Thanks for posting this.
Really like the style: letting the riders tells their story. Good work.
This was simply beautiful Max.
This is just what the whole scene needs! Well done Max and the production quality is excellent!
Have you upgraded Cameras? What cameras are you using… Looks great.
Great video Max! Just what the scene needs. Hopefully more organisers see the value in these
Great video Max 👌

This was absolutely brilliant Max well done, great viewing 🫶🏻
This is brilliant coverage Max, your best produced video and kudos for trying to give grass roots racing a punch in the arm.
Excellent video of what was Perfs Pedals
More of this please – great to see these guys get a platform.
The mist, the slo-mo & the synths!! Quality production fella!
On to the next one!!
"366 and a smashed wheel". I'm not surprised given the number of huge potholes that litter half of the course! These are my local roads, BTW, so I know how bad they are.
Awesome footage
I live on Portadown, how the hell didn't I know about this race! 😂
Great vid that! Fly on the wall of something I've got absolutely no visibility on, looks like a fun if not brutal competition!
This is excellent. Exactly what is needed to breathe some life back into the uk scene.
Perf's Pedal Race. What's with the new name? Where did our history and tradition go?
Such a shame they cant do full road closures
