I have a relatively budget XC hard tail with some Maxxis Ardent EXO 29 x 2.4" tires. They came on the bike when I bought it used, and I think they're decently worn out. The knobs are starting to get rounded over. And I have scary little grip if it's wet.

The riding I do is in New Jersey on natural trails like this:

(best photo I could find of a trail at the park I typically ride at)

I'm looking for good grip especially over wet/damp rocks and roots. I probably need some level of sidewall durability for going through rock gardens. Low rolling resistance and good ride feel is a 2nd goal. Light weight is of course always nice but the bike is already pretty heavy.

On my road bikes I have used really nice tires like Conti GP5000 and Rene Herse, and I know how much good tires can affect the ride of the bike. (I'm spoiled now). I know much less about MTB tires though. My frame looks like 2.4" is the max. The fork could probably handle a little wider tire.

What tires do you recommend?

  1. Assegai front and dhr or dissector 2 rear. Trying the dissector 2 up in the Commonwealth if the snow ever stops, lol

  2. Successful-Plane-276 on

Continental makes good mountain bike tires too, the Magnotal would be good for that kind of trail. Use soft compound up front, grip on the rear. The 2.4 are actually about 2.35 so they run a little narrow.

They aren’t cheap but people report them lasting around 1000 miles.
