Howdy! My gravel frame clears 2.2 but my current wheelset is an Enve G23 wheelset with a 23mm internal width. ENVE says 50mm is the max.

Can I run a 2.1 inch mtb tire or a 55mm gravel tire?

I’m not sure what the risks are, is this very unsafe?

Tires I’m thinking about

Mezcal 2.1

Run it, not unsafe at all. You could probably go even fatter without any real safety concerns.

  2. whatever fits frame.

50mm is crazy narrow for 23mm inner width

My old hardtail with 2.3inch tires on deoreXT 19mm width rims.

If envy says 50 mm is the max then 50 mm is the MAX. Do NOT fuck around with hookless wheel and tire combos.

Hookless a stupid idea that the manufacturers have pushed on the public to save manufacturing costs while not passing the savings on to the consumer.

If you do not already own this rim, I highly recommend not buying it

8 years ago I was racing wider tires than that on mtb on 19mm internal wheels. You’ll be fine just keep the pressures low, don’t be running crazy roadie psi.

Anything more than 50mm is going to be not very well supported by the narrow rims. If you mount 55 then don’t corner hard or you might risk tire burping

  6. Could you? Sure. Should you? Debatable. I’d say this much, if say there was a catastrophic failure you could kiss any warranty coverage goodbye. Not even gonna mention the medical implications of what a failure could mean. Not trying to spook you – just food for thought. I’d honestly just sell the wheels and buy something 100% purpose built to run the type of tire size you want. 50mm is plenty for many riders and ENVE is always desirable in the used market.

  7. We used to run 2.25s on 17mm mountain bike rims. Would have been great to have wider but that’s what we had and it was better than using 1.9s
