Bike took a knock today, the right seat stay is dented slightly with no cracks in the aluminium, just some paint damage. How risky is this for structural failure in this location given the relatively small size? I read the seat stays don’t carry much vertical load but are under more load during braking etc. Thanks in advance.

  1. Ugh that sucks, but it should be fine to ride. Just put a sticker over it and try not look at it or think about it. If it’s eating at you, maybe someone could fill it and repaint the frame, but i don’t think it would be worth it.

Consult the frame manufacturer or other frame builders. This dent is in a high stress area.

  3. I think it depends on the kind of riding you do. Are you doing aggressive riding that puts a lot of load on the frame, or are you doing more casual riding on fire roads, dirt bike paths, etc? If you’re on gentle terrain I wouldn’t think twice about riding it again. If you’re sending it down chunky stuff, I might get a professional’s opinion.

IMO it would have to take a massive whack for that to fail in its current state. If you generally take it easy I would just throw a sticker on it and go.

  4. It’s fine. It also has a horizontal support just below. If it goes it will bend first. It won’t snap immediately in a dangerous manner.

Keep an eye on it. Check if the fitment alignment of the rear wheel stays straight. But I expect many happy years for the frame.
