Over the past couple of months I’ve been posting adventure and training rides as I prepare for a 100 mile endurance race in Alaska’s wilderness.

Just a few days before the race it snowed over 12” on the course which led to the dreaded thought of a possible soft race. The race started with 5 hours straight of snow. The course ended up being a 5” wide ride rut which was carved out by the leader who was essentially breaking trail. The 134 people that entered, dwindled to 38 people after most people scratched by the first check point at mile 22.

One of my best moments was approaching the 68 mile checkpoint in 5th place and seeing four riders in front of me. By this time we were twelve hours into the race. Then I walked into the checkpoint and saw the decorated elite athletes – I was among them.

I finished the race just before 3AM in a time of 17:42. I was within thirty minutes of second place. It’s not just a race against others, it’s a race against ourselves.
