A British backpacker who killed a father-of-two by drunkenly crashing into him on an electric scooter in Australia has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Alicia Kemp, 25, from Redditch, Worcestershire, was sentenced at Perth District Court, Western Australia, on Friday, after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death while under the influence of alcohol.

The court heard the backpacker was more than three times over the legal limit when she struck 51-year-old Thanh Phan.

Investigators estimated she was driving at about the maximum speed of a rental e-scooter, 12 to 16mph, when she crashed into Mr Phan, the court was told at an earlier hearing.

Judge Wendy Hughes handed Kemp a four-year prison term, backdated to June 2025 for time served, with a non-parole period of two years.

  1. Said that she cried in court but I always wonder if they’re crying for the victim or crying out of fear of the potential consequences. Certainly didn’t look very concerned in that surveillance video

  2. "… is extremely sorry for what happened." Yeah, because she's facing prison! She is selfish! She accepted the risk of injuring someone for her own fun. She deserves doing decades! She selfishly took someone's life and only gets 18 months?!

I am so sure the moment she'll get out of prison there will be no remorse! She does not deserve to live among us. What she's done should be tattooed on her face.

  3. 18 months is a joke, every single drunk driver should be made example and put behind bars for DECADES, no matter if they are young or old. If you drive anything drunk, your intent already is malicious enough to kill.

  4. Why do people like getting drunk? You make yourself a irresponsible weapon. She should bear all the cost the family of the victim has.

  5. Besides the horrible incident that happened here, being wasted drunk in a foreign country is a dumbass decision to begin with. That's how you end up with missing kidneys or worse, human trafficking.

  6. They’re talking about her like she’s the victim. She killed a man. That’s nothing short of murder. But of course, she’s privileged, so we’re supposed to feel sorry for her? She made the decisions that night. He didn’t stand a chance. And what about his autistic child? Was this really just a tragic accident?? Is she really the victim here? One and a half years? Seriously?

  7. i bet if it was a man who did the crime and a woman who was the victim, 18 months wouldnt have been the end of it…life on recruit mode must be nice…

  8. Owning a scooter myself, the rental scooters should be banned across the world. Its way too easy if you're drunk and want to get home faster to jump on one, the people that ride them rarely knows how because they dont own one and they feel no responsibility over it/ being careful because its not theirs. Its a no brainer.
