Can this crank arm be tightened much further onto the BB so that the stance isn’t so wide? The drive side is much closer to the BB and does not have the same gap. This is how I got it from the bike shop so not sure if this is normal for the non drive side crank.

  1. How’s the gap between the crank arms and the chain stays? Or the gap between the crank arms and the seat tube? If that’s pretty close then I wouldn’t worry about it

The crank is tightened at 40nm, if the gap left is too wide then the bottom bracket spindle is too long. Now, if it works all right, leave it be. It’s probably got a gap because the drive side has the cranks.

  3. Can you take it back to the bike shop and express your concern to them? They might say “Oh, I see, let me fix that for you now.”

The gap isn’t a problem in itself, if the crank is tighten correctly. Have you measured the distance from the crank arms where the pedals are mounted to the middle of the frame?

  5. This is normal. Left side has no chain so there is some space to have left and right same distance from center.

  6. If you want a less wide stance, get a square taper BB with a shorter spindle. This width could be necessary for the cranks to clear the chain stays, though.
