Hey guys. I’m looking to buy this Trek Émonda. I noticed a bit of a scratch in the carbon behind the gear disc. The seller himself hadn’t even noticed it. I got some closeups, and asked him if it was softer than the rest of the frame, and got him to lightly tap it with a coin to see if the sound was the same across the frame as well. He said there was no problems during any of those tests, and it’s just a superficial scratch. What do you guys reckon?

  1. TripleUltraMini on

The area behind the crank is from a chain drop, probably multiple chain drops. It’s hard to see for sure in those photos but it looks pretty significant to me – I would want to see that in person.

In the the 3rd photo do I see a chip on the bottom side? That would be a No from me if that’s the case.

If it’s just scrapes, it might not be an issue as my Emonda has that too but not as bad. I’ve ridden it probably 30,000 miles like that without problems as that area is very thick. I did seal it with nail polish and put some clear vinyl tape over it. Similar tape to what is on the top of the rear chain stay to protect from chain slap. Chainstay = The top area of what you have circled on the left side.

  2. Personally I’d pass on that based on the photos. Plenty of bikes in US used market for similar price without damage.

Although the BB area is a beefy layup, damaged and exposed carbon seems susceptible to long term issues.
