In 1944, the Maquis (French Resistance) lost their radio codes during a raid. Wake volunteered to cycle from Auvergne to Châteauroux and back to find an operator. She covered 500km (310 miles) in 72 hours, passing through multiple SS checkpoints. She famously stated, “I could not even stand up” when she finally reached her destination.
