  1. Seems like LNER may address this in the next few years. The upcoming class 897s which are to replace the old IC225 sets will have a greatly updated interior with hopefully better seats, and with any luck that new interior may be retrofitted into the Azumas during a refurbishment cycle. By the time the 897s enter service most of the Azumas will have been in service for at least a decade. Other operators already run better seats in their IETs. Avanti uses the same seats as their 390s in their new 805 and 807 trains, the ride quality is better on those as well, though you still get tossed around a lot due to the much curvier nature of the WCML. The Lumo 803s are also supposed to have better seats, which is good for a low cost operator with only standard class seats. And I've heard the 810s have much better seats too.

  2. Taken this route several times, 800 series not a patch on the old HSTs for comfort. Recall about 10 -15 years ago when advance first class to Edinburgh from London was £21…and £24 to Inverness..best value £3 ever! Had a slippage problem going north around Pitlochry one time, several attempts to gain traction, eventually arrived over an hour late, but wine trolley came to and fro until they ran out of supplies…..and a full refund!

  3. Doing this in a week or so and glad to see it is a Dine service with 3 courses as advertised to myself when booking. I find some of your criticisms quite harsh, I'm sure the Evero 1st class has practically the same issues. I'm curious how much you paid?

  4. I've not done this journey since its gone from 125HST to the Azuma.
The Mk3/4 coaching stock is far better. Miles better ride comfort and plush seats. I've no idea why they don't put decent seats in new trains.
I expect they are just a means of getting people from a-b and nothing else.

  5. Thank you for yet another excellent review. One thing that I find weird about this, but also some other British trains, is that even in 1st class there is only a single armrest between the seats. Double armrests (or equivalent very wide single armrests) is more or less a standard feature in pretty much any train in Europe. Are trains in Britain narrower than in most of Europe? Perhaps lower loading gauge? And I still get the feeling that interior still looks on the cheaper side if you know what I mean?

  6. Unpopular opinion: I much prefer these to Scotrail's miserably cold HSTs when travelling from Inverness to Edinburgh. I often think the criticisms of the class 800 are somewhat exaggerated based on our nostalgic fondness for old rolling stock in the UK.

  7. If you were a rich Tory, you'd have your private helicopter and/or jets take you everywhere. Such that the "trains" are merely for the poor suckers / peons who have been so thoroughly trained to believe that saying "mustn't grumble" is "patriotic." The UK is a shambles, thanks to the Tories and Brexit.

  8. Brilliant review, very informative! I also hate it when the buffet area is closed: what a shame to spend so much time on a train and not be able to grab a little snack to pass the time. Maybe they should consider extending their opening hours… But the landscapes sure are worth the ride! 😉

  9. I did Inverness – York on the same service (07.55 from Ness) . I did enjoy the trip as LNER is far more comfortable than Scotrail , and they had beer 😉 )

  10. Did you know this was the unit involved in Huntingdon? Also was this filmed in Jan 2025 or Jan 26? As when I saw this unit in Dec 25 I didn't have the vinyls since the incident

  11. Apparently their planned new trains are going to have the same bright lighting in standard class. It’s a fine journey if you live in Inverness and go to Edinburgh for the day, using their First Class service with the meals is well worth it, seems to be very popular with Invernesians going to Edinburgh for the day. I wouldn’t use it to go to London, would fly instead. Much cheaper and much more comfortable. I suspect mostly tourists go the whole journey

  12. ein nice hello from germany nach GB i heiko mag eure züge weil the so nice sind and ihr habt goodes essen weil dat so good ancomet bei me weil ihr seit für me dat best land the world😉😊😇🥰😘☺

  13. man muss sagen am abend sizt the zug sehr krasse aus and nice beleuchet mit diese nice movie werde i heute good schlafen and im dream weiter für euch als my loven briten the einfahrt frei halten😉😊

  14. I was honestly amazed by York when I visited there with my friend from Manchester, John. The train museum was beyond impressive as was the rest of the city. Our day trip there from Manchester was extremely amazing!

  15. It’s many years since I travelled up to Inverness from Wolverhampton, and thence to Forres on the Moray Firth ( I hope I got that right) I seem to remember the journey took 10 hours up to Inverness but I was enthralled by the journey through the Highlands. It was a very cold winter with heaps of snow and I think this added to the romance of the journey. I remember seeing a deer on the hillsides scraping away at the snow, presumably looking for something to eat. He looked very “Monarch of the Glen”I loved it! I now live in California but none of my adventures here have quite matched the romance of that ride through the Highlands.

  16. Seamlessly swapping out a train like that is something I have never seen from an airline. I wonder what was wrong with the one taken out of service.

  17. They really need to do something about the seats. The Amfleet carriages used on Amtrak in the US since the late 1970s (and now starting to be replaced with Siemens cars that have similarly awful seats) have similarly dodgy ride, but the seats were developed by Amtrak, Budd, Pullman-Standard and consultants Henry Dreyfuss & Associates and painstakingly designed, and it really does take the edge off the ride issues. I don't know why current vendors are pushing such awful seats — or why rail operators across North America, Europe and Asia are just accepting it. Maybe they have a secret deal with the airlines….

  18. Couple of years ago I did Ely to Cambridge by Train. Cambridge to Stanstead by Bus. Standstead to london by Train, and finally London to Southampton by Train, can't remember if I had to change trains for the last bit?

  19. You said at York railway museum that you could spend 3-4 hours I am not a railway enthusiasts by any manner of means but I spent a bout 3 hours and only saw half the stuff before having to leave as I was going to the football match in York their old ground in Botham Crescent I did take about 60+ photos in the museum I think I had to pay to get in maybe a fiver this would be about 2018

  20. With all the snow around Inverness and North of Scotland it does make it very beautiful. And LNER are still the best train operator on the East Coast Main Line. Plus they have ordered new Class 897 “Serenza” trains to replace the Class 91 “Intercity 225” Mk4 stocks and to see them coming into service from 2027/28.

  21. How on earth did seating designed for short distance suburban travel – the Fainsa Sophia model seats end up on very long distance routes to Inverness and Penzance? Why are they still being fitted? Transport for Wales, class 197, introduced 2023 are also fitted with these boneshakers, with the longest distance route from Pembroke to Manchester, taking about 6 1/2 hours.

  22. Awesome trip dude ! I love it when you post euro trips
I absolutely hate these trains in 2nd class. Iron board seats and way too bright lights. I did London – York 2 years ago and swore i never ride with LNER again until they refurbish with new seats

  23. Not a patch on the original Highland Chieftain run by GNER,Silver service, table cloth covered tables.Passengers were called to the Dining car on the evening service from Waverley.Superb.
