In 1972 Jon Jantzen and Paul Hamilton traveled by 10-speed bicycle from Paris, France to Mussoorie, India over six months, from April 13 to October 13.
Below is their 3-part journey authored by Jon himself, perfectly preserved in 60,000 words and hundreds of his original photos. It also includes the maps/routes of where they actually rode:
Part 1: France to Greece
Part 2: Turkey to Iran
Part 3: Afghanistan to India
A few statistics from the trip:
- Distance = 10,050 kilometers or 6,281 miles
- Time: 184 days
- Distance per day: 55 kilometers per day, or 34 miles per day
- Number of tires = 6 tires discarded for my bike, so the trip required 8 tires
- Cost of trip for one person = $447 spent over 184 days = $2.43 per day in 1972 dollars for daily expenses or $15.00 per day in 2020 dollars
Enjoy!
