I installed a new cassette and chain. Shifting was poor so I tried to fix it myself but i couldn’t get it to shift smoothly. So i sent the bike to a bike shop to fix it. When i got it back it was only slightly better but far from perfect. I then brought the bike to another bike shop to fix the poor shifting. When i got the bike back it was the same a I brought it in and they told me that they have no clue what is wrong and that they do not want to work on it anymore because they probably couldn’t fix it and it would only cost me money.

I have a 1×12 sram apex axs xplr (11-44t, 40t) derailleur.

The main problem is when shifting from the 13t cog to the 12t cog. And in the middle when shifting up wards into bigger cogs.(video)

Indexing seems fine, derailleur hanger also seems fine (don’t see a bend and bike shop probably checked that one). Although the gap between the largest cog and the upper pulley wheel seems a bit tight. Sram recommends 7mm. I tried to get it to 7mm but even when i turn the b srew all the way it still doesn’t get to 7mm (max i couldn’t get it to is 5mm)

I don’t know what to do anymore. I anymore has an idea what it could be please comment.

Thank you in advance!

Poor shifting, need help.

  1. I presume they are all genuine components? No cheap substitutes?

The most likely cause in my mind would be a bent derailleur hanger. This typically causes bad shifting on one side of the cassette. In your case the side with the smaller cogs.
There are tools that would allow you to check and adjust this yourself, or you could ask a bike shop to specifically work on this. Another very simply solution (if this is indeed the problem) would be to buy a new hanger.

And maybe B-screw adjustments could be done, but this is unlikely the problem, and bike shops should have done this.

  2. SampleProfessional33 on

First, the B limit is off. Put the bike in one gear below the easiest. Adjust the B limit screw so that the upper pully of the derailleur almost overlaps the easiest gear. Something like a nickel should be able to pass between the easiest gear and the upper pully of the derailleur when you are in one gear below the easiest gear. Once the B limit is set, I can see that the derailleur pully is not directly below the gear for each gear. You are a little to the right when looking at it the way the camera is looking. To move the derailleur, there is a button behind the shift lever. Hold the right button down, and at the same time click the shifter like you are shifting. When you hold that inner button at the same time, you are in micro adjust. There is a button on each lever, right and left. Hold the left button and shift the left lever, and it moves the derailleur left (easier direction) and same for right lever button and lever to micro adjust to the right (harder direction)
