I may be swapping the chainring or this FD so it could be all for naught… but I’ve searched everywhere and cannot find out how to route this cable for my Shimano FD-M100. I’m using ST3000 brifters that seem to have a trim index in them along with the normal 3 clicks.
Ultimately, I’m having trouble with the derailleur getting into the further chainring. Yes, I need a third had, and yes, the cable may be old, but I’m wondering if there is any chance this would be compatible with the chainring I have now.
So far I have attempted routing over the metal notch, with the cable pointing towards the crank. This feels odd and certainly doesn’t create the best pull. Second, I’ve tried straight through, under the metal notch, sort of demonstrated by this diagram for another Shimano shifter. Last, I’ve tried this wonky, “through the spring” as a last ditch effort to create some sort of better leverage towards the last click.
The closest I got to clean shifting was with the “straight through” method shown in the photos. This seemed to sort of get the chain onto the outer ring, but ultimately it just rubbed enough it would eventually jump back to second.
Any thoughts on other routing I can try? Do I just need to wait for my cable puller to arrive? Is this chainring/FD/Brifter simply incompatible?
Thanks for any help, my searches haven’t been so fruitful and I’m certainly on last legs on this project. Indexing may be the death of me.
Edit: Are people overreacting to this plastic cover breaking? (https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/comments/1i9olfg/small\_crack\_on\_front\_derailleur\_100gs/) Mine is certainly cracked but I can't imagine this hurting things.

Pic 3 is how I would build frankenbikes, stoned, in college
Before anything else, make sure the FD and crankset are compatible.
Make sure that the BB has the right amount of spacers, too.
I love the trim function but the few times I’ve had to install them, and with compatible FD and cranks and proper BB spacers, there was still some trial and error.
I think you’re not getting the cable tight enough. I usually jam the hand grips end of a pair of pliers between the FD and frame to hold the FD out while I tighten the cable.
Bolt in 2nd pic isn’t seated in the hole correctly. I don’t think that’s your problem but there’s like 1.5 threads engaged.
If you’re the type that thinks dying with more tools is better than dying with less tools, Park (and others) makes this tool called a 4th-Hand (BT-2).
Sans tool, a thing you could do is turn the low limit screw in, say, 1/2 turn, clamp the cable, and then turn the low limit screw out the 1/2 turn to where it was.
