Day three of our Prague to Vienna recumbent trike journey takes us from Jindřichův Hradec to Camp Velo, and it might be the most quietly beautiful ride yet.

We start slow, rolling away from an intriguing hotel converted from what feels like an old farmhouse, before stopping for coffee in the historic square of Jindřichův Hradec. Standing among towering monuments, angels, priests, and stone gargoyles, we end up wondering: who plans these things? Who approves them? And how do you even budget for something like this?

Once back on the road, the ride shifts gears. We dive into forest singletrack, pushing the suspension of our recumbent trikes through tight trails and rolling hills. At times, the landscape feels unmistakably Canadian — dense forest, filtered light, quiet roads — “Canadian Czechia,” as we start calling it.

Along the way, we pass a deer farm that feels almost unreal, talk about Granden’s fascination with photographing doors, and ride through stretches where light barely breaks through the trees — a quiet reminder of hope finding its way in.

The day takes a heavier turn as we explore World War II–era bunkers built by Czechoslovakia in preparation for a war that never reached them directly, but changed everything around them. Standing inside, it’s impossible not to imagine the fear, uncertainty, and history that shaped this place.

Another day on the road. Another reminder that slow travel reveals more than speed ever could.

  1. Hi Matt. Yes, I like the ride segments of the video where no comment is needed. Original sound is sometimes better than music🙂Just maybe aim less on your shoes 😀Anyway, I understand that you need to focus also on steering. Actually I admire how you've manage to film the offroad part.
BTW, your Czech reading skills have improved a lot. No longer trying to read it the complicated "English" way 😀

  2. Another awesome video, thank you.
I did start thinking you weren’t mentioning the Cold War.
My Czech chick friend inherited a house built in 1930 and had its bathroom bombed in 1936.
Irony she escaped Czechoslovakia in 1986 and after returning in the late 1990’s to live in the home she inherited she was living directly across the road from a retired bodyguard who would’ve shot her if she had tried escaping past him.
She never let him know that she had escaped during the Cold War.
I love my time in Czech Republic between 8 to 10 weeks a year over a number of years.

  3. longer ride vids is better i am here for the rides and stay cause the vids are superb I was a cycle traveler in my younger days but life got in the way now i am disabled cause of diabetes so i got a trike now and love it.

  4. Matt, such a great part of your trip, I wish I could have stayed for the extra days that you experienced. You put a lot of work into this masterpiece video. Your combination of action from trike to sky to stills is very artistic. Every part works. Thanks for all your sharing. This one is a must see. I want to go back.

  5. Great downhills! Especially that one in the forest. Makes me hurry up repairing my trike-brakes! 😉
