Day 297. 22km (94,471kms 8yrs)
That sauna must’ve worked a treat as my jelly legs were back to normal for the short ride into Oxford. The weather was miserable though; a quick break in the rain allowed me to get most of the way there without getting drenched. The final few kilometres though were enough to saturate me. Being a weekend I passed lots of hardy cyclists out for a countryside spin, including a couple on a tandem. Once in the city, Oxford’s streets were filled with bikes; far more locked up than I saw ridden though.
Given the weather, my nice afternoon in Oxford would have to be an indoors one now, so I headed first to the covered market where some vendors remain decades later – Ben is still selling his cookies – but the butchers and greengrocers are all gone, replaced by craft and food stalls. I bought an excellent Lebanese wrap from once such place, and admired the Christmas trees and lights.
Back into the rain it was a very quick ride to the ashmoleum museum (free) where I planned to spend an hour or two before moving on to the Pitt Rivers Museum. But the museum was so captivating – and the weather outside so miserable – that I ended up staying until it was time to leave for my hosts.
In east Oxford Lucie hosted me in a beautiful home decorated with mountain photography and travel souvenirs. They have a trip coming up to Tasmania so I was able to advise on nice hiking routes as I flicked through the guide book, getting a tad homesick in the process. Ironic since I’m now just two days from ‘home’.

Yes, you had a great walk.😇👍👍🚴♀
Absolutely loved this rainy UK bike tour! 🚴♂🌧 Seeing Oxford’s Covered Market and the Ashmolean Museum from a cycling perspective is so unique. The way you captured the vibe of a grim, rainy day makes me want to explore Oxford on two wheels!
