As drones monitor the entire battlefield and destroy a growing number of military and civilian vehicles, soldiers are turning to long-forgotten, relatively quiet forms of transport that require neither fuel nor complex maintenance – horses and donkeys. İn this case Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled a Russian cavalry assault in the Oleskiivka area, part of the broader Alexanderivka-Novopavlivka front.
This was reported by the “Iron Falcons” UAV battalion from the 67th Separate Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine’s Ground Forces. According to the battalion’s report, the operators used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to disrupt and halt a Russian cavalry assault.
“Russian cavalry assaults are not a legend, but a real phenomenon, no matter how absurd it may sound,” the statement read.
Despite its seeming absurdity, the Russian military continues to attempt infiltrations with small storm groups, relying not only on machinery but also using horses for these attacks.
A video released by the battalion shows the destruction of a Russian mounted assault group near Oleskiivka.
“It’s a pity for the horses, but they survived, unlike the Russians,” the battalion added.
This is not the first time Russian forces have been seen using horses in battle, a tactic that has become increasingly rare in modern warfare. Earlier this month, Ukrainian soldiers from the 1st Separate Assault Brigade, named after Dmytro Kotsiubailo, successfully eliminated two Russian troops advancing on horseback and seized their horses for use in battlefield evacuation.
Brigade Commander Dmytro “Perun” Filatov confirmed that the horses were not harmed during the firefight.
“No animals were harmed during the defensive operation,” the brigade emphasized.
The mounted assault occurred as Russian forces attempted to breach Ukrainian defensive positions with cavalry. Thanks to early warnings from Ukrainian scouts, the defenders were able to prepare and neutralize the threat effectively. In a related development, recent images and videos suggest that Russian forces have started equipping their horse-mounted units with Starlink satellite terminals and cameras.
According to OSINT investigators, including Special Kherson Cat, the footage from January 8 shows Russian soldiers riding horses with improvised frames carrying flat-panel satellite terminals and apparent camera systems.
Recall, Ukrainian soldiers from the 1st Separate Assault Regiment even managed to seize some Russian horses, putting them to work carrying their wounded.
The front line has become a zone where almost any vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine, from armoured equipment to civilian cars and quad bikes, is spotted and risks destruction. The danger is greatest in hard-to-traverse areas, where movement is slower.
When Russia goes on the offensive, logistical strains worsen, pushing its forces to explore alternative solutions.
The first isolated use of horses by Russian forces occurred some time ago. Horses, donkeys and mules were primarily used as pack animals to carry supplies through rugged terrain. By the end of 2025, however, their use had become more frequent.

Ukrainian defenders do all they can to not harm the horses…
The drones buzz the soldiers until they fall off the horse and then strike the russians.

Looking at some videos I'm sure the horses did not always survive. Some would have sustained life threatening injuries, but unfortunately that's the horror of war.
The horses have more intelligence than the soldiers on them.

Ukraine's drone operators has a heart for animals good to see that, however it is also good to see dam orcs destroyed!
It's not humane to kill horses or donkeys. Russians are cannon fodder anyway, expendable goods.
I never even realised they had video & drone technology in Napoleon's time !!!!!
russia are the real time travelers, they first came in tanks, then cars, then motor bikes and scootys, now horses and last they will be animal skins and shooting arrows
Glória a Ucrânia ❤ glória aos heróis força Ucrânia
Brigado senhor presidente francês 🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤️
She said they were using horses and donkey's, I didn't see any donkey's except the ones on horseback.
… And when the Ukrainians have yoinked all their horses, the orcs will field their feared 124th Pogo Stick Regiment…
When you hear a distinctive "Squeak-Thump-Squeak-Thump-Squeak-Thump" through the fog, it's the 124th tactically hopping toward you over a frozen No Man's Land, taking themselves very seriously. After several days of training, they're, after all, considered an elite force…
AI being what it is i need to see a russian wearing the penguin suit riding a donkey leading a camel with a 50 cal mounted to the humps. I can't be the only one
…..коней дуже жалко….а свинособак ні…..
IS WONDERFUL TO SEE THAT EVEN IN WAR,UKRAINIAN DON'T HARM HORSES!!!THIS WAR WILL BE HISTORIC!!!RUZZIANS COULD NEVER DO SUCH A THING,BECAUSE THEIR CULTURE OF DESTRUCTION DOESN'T ALLOW TO DO THIS BETWEEN THEM!!!

If you believe “no horses were hurt” during these battles then you are a fool.
