The Azure Coast, or Côte d’Azur, is the iconic Mediterranean coastline of southeastern France, famously known as the French Riviera. Stretching from the Italian border in the east to roughly Saint-Tropez or Toulon in the west, the region is celebrated for its deep blue waters, sunny climate, and a unique blend of glamorous resorts and historic medieval villages.

The term “Azure Coast” was coined by writer Stéphen Liégeard in 1887, inspired by the striking color of the sea. Today, it remains a premier global destination for luxury, art, and Mediterranean culture.

Major Coastal Hubs

NICE serves as the vibrant capital of the region, balancing the charm of an old Italianate city with the grandeur of a modern seaside resort. It is a major cultural center with a rich history of attracting world-renowned artists.

Promenade des Anglais: A world-famous 7km waterfront walkway perfect for cycling or strolling along the pebble beaches.

Vieux Nice (Old Town): A maze of narrow streets filled with pastel-colored buildings, local markets like the Cours Saleya flower market, and traditional bistros.

Artistic Legacy: Home to the Marc Chagall National Museum and the Matisse Museum, reflecting the city’s long connection to the art world.

CANNES is synonymous with global prestige and high fashion, primarily known for hosting the world’s most famous film festival. Unlike the pebble beaches of Nice, Cannes offers long stretches of fine sand and a more polished, high-end atmosphere.

La Croisette: A legendary boulevard lined with palm trees, luxury boutiques, and iconic hotels like the Carlton.

Le Suquet: The historic old quarter situated on a hill, providing panoramic views of the bay and the glamorous yachts in the Old Port.

Sandy Beaches: Offers numerous private and public beaches that are popular for sunbathing and water sports.

MONACO while an independent city-state, is an integral part of the Riviera’s identity, representing the pinnacle of luxury and exclusivity. It is one of the most densely populated and wealthiest places on earth.

Monte Carlo: The district famous for its opulent Casino de Monte-Carlo and luxury shopping.

The Rock (Monaco-Ville): The medieval heart of the principality, where the Prince’s Palace and the Oceanographic Museum are located.

Formula 1 Grand Prix: Host to one of the most prestigious motor races in the world, which runs through the city’s narrow streets.

SAINT TROPEZ transformed from a quiet fishing village into a hedonistic playground for the “jet set” in the 1950s, largely popularized by cinema icons like Brigitte Bardot. It maintains a distinct “bohemian-chic” vibe that sets it apart from larger cities.

Pampelonne Beach: A legendary 5km stretch of sand lined with exclusive beach clubs and turquoise waters.

The Citadel: A 17th-century fortress offering views of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and housing a maritime museum.

Quai de l’Epi: A prime spot for “people-watching” where massive superyachts dock right next to traditional cafes.

MENTON is the last French town before the Italian border, often called “The Pearl of France.” It is famous for its exceptionally mild microclimate and its historic lemon groves.

Fête du Citron: An annual festival where giant sculptures are made entirely from lemons and oranges.

Serre de la Madone: One of several world-class botanical gardens that thrive thanks to the town’s unique weather.

Old Town Architecture: Characterized by steep, narrow alleys and brightly colored facades that feel more Italian than French.
