The Liverpool City Region has been announced as a host for the 2027 Tour de France, with Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens welcoming the finish of stage two of the men’s race on Saturday 3 July 2027.
In a historic announcement by race organisers, the peloton will race from Keswick in Cumbria, through Lancashire, before speeding through Knowsley and St Helens and finishing with a dramatic super sprint along Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, ending on The Strand in the shadow of the city’s world-famous Three Graces.
This video features reaction and insight from:
Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region
Chris Boardman, three-time Tour de France stage winner and Active Travel Commissioner for England
Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France (ASO)
Esther Britten, Deputy Director of Major Events, UK Sport
The full routes for both the men’s and women’s races were revealed in a nationwide “Tour de Skies” moment, with landmarks across the country illuminated simultaneously — including Liverpool’s waterfront and Mersey Tunnels — marking a major milestone on the road to the 2027 Grand Départs, set to be the largest free sporting spectacle in British history.
The arrival of the Tour de France is expected to deliver a multi-million-pound boost to the Liverpool City Region’s visitor economy, while also shining a spotlight on the region’s active travel programme, which is delivering more than 600km of new cycling and walking routes.
The Tour de France adds to an impressive run of global sporting events coming to the region, alongside The Open at Royal Birkdale and the UEFA EURO 2028 Championships at Everton FC’s new stadium.
