Nestled along the banks of the Dordogne River in the Lot department of southwestern France, Carennac is one of the country’s most beautiful and well-preserved medieval villages. Classified as one of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France,” this hidden gem is a true step back in time, with its stone houses, narrow streets, and breathtaking views of the river.

✨ A Brief History of Carennac
Carennac’s history dates back over 1,000 years, when a Cluniac priory was founded here in the 11th century. The Priory of Saint-Pierre remains one of its most impressive landmarks, featuring stunning Romanesque architecture and intricate stone carvings. The village thrived during the Middle Ages as a religious and trading hub, with its riverside location making it a strategic point for merchants and pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela.

During the Hundred Years’ War and the Wars of Religion, Carennac saw its share of conflicts, but its medieval charm remained intact. It was also home to François Fénelon, a famous 17th-century writer and theologian, who lived in the Château des Doyens, another historic highlight of the village.

  2. This mostly unknown village is one of the prettiest I have seen in France. Even on cloudy day it was amazing. No cars, no crowds… just the sound of the birds and the history. France has some amazing villages to discover and this is truly one of them. Get ready to be amazed, just like I was. 🙂

We are planning to enter France through Switzerland and we stay about 4 days! I love quite traditional things like this beautiful village! Have you got any idea of which places is nice to visit ?

  5. Bonjour de l'Ain, thank you for bringing us to Carennac with you. What a pristine and peaceful village, away from all the ugliness civilisation brings along. I just love these stone walls, beautiful…Carennac makes me think of the medieval village Yvoire (Haute-Savoie). You are my favourite character: Tintin & Milou.

  6. A unique village even by Dordogne standards. As much as I love La Roque-Gageac and Beynac-et-Cazenac, this village would give those two a run for their money any day.
