We all had Stingrays, or some cheap Montgomery Wards or Western Flyer clone. High rise handlebars and banana seats were standard. I remember doing unofficial races around dirt tracks like these guys. Rubber band starts, just like the motocross guys. We started out with 10 minute motos which was a few laps around the track. Then we went to 5 minute motos. But the paperboy bikes with 26 inch tires were always faster. At least in my neck of the woods, we didn't have the concept of a groomed track and 30 second races and starting from a hill. That all came years later. Fast forward 10 years and I was 20 and my younger brothers and sister were racing. That's how I got started, back in about 1981. When my sister traded her Redline Proline, which was too big for her, for a sleek Hutch with those weird skinny wheels. I got the clunky Redline and, man, I loved that bike. Never placed hire than 3rd in Novice class, but had a blast every other Saturday.

I'm posting this to show that BMX was around before anyone strung together the letters B, M, and X. And it will always be around.
