Should just be dry and clean, squirt some wd40 in maybe twice a year.
Grease will accumulate grime forming a paste. Wd40 cleans and protects.

Silicone is good, shimano grease for shifters is better (but expensive). Any oil works, though some will last more than others. Just don’t put (normal) grease as it will clog the mechanism.
