I picked up a Specialized Pizza Rack for my Wilde Rambler, and just realized the long nut doesn’t fit through either drilled side of my head tube. Do I need to use that nut, or can I use a shorter nut inside the headtube itself (but then only torquing the front of the tubing) or a longer bolt all the way through the back with a washer/nut (ugly)?
Alternate suggestions?

use a regular (nylon) nut

Looks like the back of the fork is threaded. If that bolt doesn’t fit the threads try an M5x0.8 bolt and maybe get an acorn nut to put on the back once it’s tightened up.

just get a long-ass M6 bolt so you can stick it through both holes. put a nut on the backside of the fork, even though that side is threaded; don’t take chances with front-end stuff.
edit: make sure it is M6 first obviously. try screwing that bolt you have into the backside; if it threads, it’s M6. if it’s too big, it’s M5
Take a trip to your local hardware store and get a bolt that works.
You can drill out the back side of the fork with a bit the size of that recessed nut, I’ve done that on modern brakes with old bike frames.
Get a longer M5 x .8 bolt, most bike shops will just give you one or charge you a buck or two. Use that new bolt with a washer, run the bolt through the hole in the front, thread into those threads on the back of the fork until everything is snug, install a nylock nut on the extra thread out of the back.
