I started using bar mitts last year and I quite like them. But they don’t really seal will around the top so cold air gets in – my bike has a set of cables and the bar with a gap between, and the cables are quite stiff so they don’t go next to the bar. I put a clip between them to help seal that gap which helps, but air still gets in. Does anyone have advice on sealing that gap up any better?

I also thought something that radiated heat would be nice, so I got some electric hand warmers and dropped them in – and they do help a lot but they don’t radiate heat, you have to hold them, so they don’t help as much as I’d like. They do help, but I have to press my fingers against them. But I don’t see any that would radiate heat and warm up the inside of the mitt? Has anyone made anything work?

I’m using these for clarity: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DFQ214MF

I really like the idea but doesn’t feel like I’ve found the right warmers!

I have Velcro closures on my bar mitts, and I bought USB powered handle bar warmers. Was out this weekend…. 20° plus the wind chill…. I don’t wear gloves of any kind, for manual dexterity, brakes and gears.
I do get a slight breeze in there. But it’s better than every other option I tried.
Everything bought from that amazing place 4 years ago.
I’m 60 years old. And can’t handle the cold on my hands like when I was younger.

Do you wear gloves underneath? A light pair may go a long way.

Sleeve warmers or a thicker top layer may also help. If you can keep your arms from losing too much heat, your hands will be warmer

  3. You could cut a foam block to fill the gap. I think there is a company that includes these with their pogies.

A simple option could by shoving some fabric in there. An old hat, or buff, or sock, or whatever.

  4. In the winter I use cheap foam grips from the dollar store. They’re never cold to the touch and also ordered tiny foam sleeves from AliExpress for the brakes levers. Stuffed a rag in each of the mitts to stop cold from coming in! I start wearing gloves at -15°C/5°F and below!
