Exmouth is a classic seaside town in East Devon, at the mouth of the River Exe estuary (its name literally means “at the mouth of the Exe”). It’s the gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and one of the oldest holiday resorts in Devon.
Key Facts & Features
• Population: ~35,000 (plus thousands more in summer)
• Location: Where the River Exe meets the English Channel, 10 miles south of Exeter, 2–3 hours by train from London Paddington.
• Beach: 2 miles of golden sand, gently shelving and very family-friendly. It faces east, so it gets morning sun and spectacular sunrises over the estuary.
• Part of the Jurassic Coast: The western end of the 95-mile World Heritage coastline starts here with the red sandstone cliffs of Orcombe Point and the Geoneedle landmark.
Things Exmouth is Known For
1. Water sports paradise
• One of the UK’s top kitesurfing and windsurfing spots (steady side-onshore winds).
• Stand-up paddleboarding, wing-foiling and sailing are huge.
• Exmouth Duck Pond (actually the estuary) is used for national training camps.
2. A la Ronde
• Quirky 18th-century 16-sided house built by two spinster cousins, now National Trust. Covered in shells and bizarre crafts.
3. Exmouth to Budleigh Salterton coastal walk
• Stunning 4–5 mile clifftop section of the South West Coast Path with red cliffs and views across to Portland.
4. Exe Estuary Trail
• Flat, traffic-free cycle route all the way around the estuary to Exeter and Dawlish Warren (great for families).
5. Wildlife
• Huge numbers of wading birds and avocets on the estuary (RSPB reserves at Bowling Green Marsh and Exminster Marshes nearby).
• Dolphins and seals sometimes follow boats out of the marina.
6. History
• Popular Regency & Victorian resort – Byron, Lady Nelson and even a young Queen Victoria holidayed here.
• Role in D-Day: Thousands of American troops embarked from Exmouth for Utah Beach in 1944; there’s a small D-Day museum in the town.
Town Centre & Vibe
• Traditional British seaside feel: fish & chips, amusement arcades, crazy golf, independent cafés.
• The Strand is the main hub with pubs, restaurants and live music.
• Growing food scene: Michelin-recommended places like Lympstone Manor (10-min drive) and newer spots such as Abbozzo (Italian) and The Point (seafront bar/restaurant).
Budleigh Salterton is a charming, peaceful seaside town on the Jurassic Coast in East Devon, England, about 15 miles (24 km) south-east of Exeter. It’s renowned for its unspoilt character, beautiful natural setting, and relaxed atmosphere — the perfect spot for a gentle getaway away from busier tourist resorts.
The town sits at the mouth of the River Otter, where the estuary creates a lovely mix of reed beds, grazing marshes, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest that’s excellent for birdwatching (especially during migration seasons).
Here are some of its most iconic views — the famous long pebble beach with its colourful, ancient stones and the striking red cliffs:

The beach stretches for around 2 miles (3 km) and is made up of uniquely colourful pebbles that originated over 400 million years ago — many visitors enjoy collecting or just admiring them. It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast, with dramatic red sandstone cliffs and coastal paths offering superb walks (the South West Coast Path runs right through here).
The town centre has a lovely, traditional feel with a small brook running down the high street, independent shops, galleries, cafés, and places for a classic Devon cream tea. Here’s a glimpse of the picturesque high street:

  2. Hi Harvey, lovely ride out, great scenery. Two questions— Do you ever stop for refreshments like a coffee as i find that interesting and entertaining as part of a trip out, also have you in better weather ever crossed over to Starcross on the Ferry from Exmouth and rode through Dawlish and into Teignmouth my favourite place ? Lovely video and thanks for sharing Harvey 👏👋

  3. Great video, blue skyes, sea and choice of backing music, memories of summer.
Our council employed guys with leaf blowers along some of our cycle paths but they did not collect them up. A few minutes later the wind had blown them all back across the path – lack of common sense unfortunatley!
    All the best for 2026.

  5. Lovely part of the country. Happy memories as a kid going on holiday in the next county to you and then camping with my mates in Torquay when we were older in the late 80's. Used to get the bus from the campsite into Torquay each evening, drinking in the Yacht and other pubs and clubs and then getting a jacket spud from the stand in the street before getting the bus back to the campsite, were good times back then.
