Over 4 months ago I left home in the Netherlands with the plan of cycling to Denmark and taking the ferry to Iceland. But a few days after I left, many countries in Europe started closing their borders
in response to a spreading virus. Instead of taking the ferry to Iceland, I took a ferry to Sweden.
For 3 months I cycled through Sweden, along its coast, through its vast forests, in snow, in sun, in freezing temperatures.
I crossed Sweden´s highest elevated road and cycled between walls of snow on the Wilderness road.
The beauty of Norway was beyond anything that I could have imagined. Epic mountain views, natural wonders, white sandy beaches and beautiful places to wildcamp everywhere.
After almost 9000 kilometers I made it to North Cape. Sitting in the giant globe, I soaked up the midnight sun and continued to dream of my next destination. How nice would it be to cycle from North Cape to Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.
So now I started cycling south, through Finland and Lapland. Finland is a large country with lots and lots of nature. It is known as the land of a thousand lakes. I didn´t often take the time to stop and enjoy the scenery though, because as soon as you stopped you got overwhelmed by a zillion mosquitoes.

  1. Great video! I have always wanted to cycle in Finland, but the mosquitos put me off – were they bad in the south of the country? I always get bitten by them – they seem to like me too much!

  2. Terrific video again mate….👍🏽
We just got back from a short 5 night tour here in Victoria and the flys and mosquito were very bad at times, luckily we had our head nets….👍🏽👍🏽 best $10 investment ever and packs down to 30mm X 20mm 10g.
    Bloody Mosquito's….!

  4. Great music, aerial footage and very professionally put together! Also it pays to know what berries and mushrooms 🍄to pick so you don't get poisoned! Lol! The best cycling video I've seen yet.

  5. Another great video and presentation Niels… Finnish mustiques my god they're determined. I estimated that every time I stopped while cyling south down Finland between 50 and 200 would instantly swarm in my ears, nose, eyes, mouth and any exposed flesh. They bit through 2 layers of light woollen tops or cycling jumper plus a top. Even worse that Milford Sound I think in South Island NZ. Finland might be the capital, but I think Siberia and Alaska would challenge for top spot. Hope you're going well in Africa 🙂

  6. Brother, thank you so much for your cycling videos. I am loving it and going through first episode after finiding this random video. You have beautifully described your jouerny and nicely documented. If you ever cycle to North Eastern India search me on warmshowers.org . We would love to host you.

  7. I found myself thinking I'd care to see more interactions (time spent off the bike) but am ultimately really appreciative of your less is more approach. It really sums up the vastness of the landscapes and the simplicity of the road. Good on you. I'm about to embark on route through the Maritimes of eastern Canada and your video was a welcomed break from all the research. If I may ask, how much time do you put in to planning your routes? How much of it is just sort of figured out in real time? Cheers in advance!

  8. I am an old man (72years) and love cycling. The commentary and videos from Niels are the best I have seen- I just love them and watch parts just about every night.
What I would really appreciate is the list of the music. Fits the videos so well _ excited for you Niels keep up the great work😃

  9. You take a lot of adventurous routes. To those bicycle travellers that prefer pavement, Finland is absolutely fantastic since you can ride anywhere on any road even without a map. There are really no roadblocks or deadends like the tunnels in Norway, too tight or gated roads in Sweden and you usually have multiple good road options. It's as easy as cycling in denmark, with less traffic and much more mosquitos.
