Day 278. 47km (93,741kms 8yrs)
I survived the snowy night of camping just fine in the shelter, though I wouldn’t want to push it much colder. Once the sun was up the forest sparkled beautifully beneath a pale blue sky. Wet shoes couldn’t be helped but the wet gloves were impossible; the cold burning my fingers as I descended. Instead I managed by alternating bare hands on my neck until things warmed up enough. As the altitude dropped the dusting of snow became lighter until it was just a heavy frost, and then disappeared altogether.
On the way to Bonn I warmed up in a cafe with a traditional German November snack of Weckmann, and stopped at the 12th-century Doppelkirche – a ‘double’ church where the nobility would sit on the upper level, the common parishioners on the ground level. Since there’s nice frescoes on the ground floor’s ceiling, the wealthy were missing out here I think. In Bonn the Christmas markets are into their final stages of preparation. I’m kicking myself that I’ll be leaving the country right before they begin properly.
Just west of the city I arrived to my Warm Showers hosts; I was enormously grateful to Marco and family for accepting my last minute request. Furthermore the forecast for the following day was poor so they invited me to stay. This allowed me the opportunity to speak about my trip at the school Marco teaches at. The kids – not typically eager to speak English in front of their classmates – had so many questions after my presentation that we ran over time. I’m assured it was a big success.

Ooh, proper winter scenery, lovely!
It was a shame you missed the Christmas markets. I bet they would have fun, especially the food vendors. 😊
