Hi all, I currently have the privilege of building up a magnificent early 90s time trial bike for my road racing season next spring, so I’ve wanted to put together a “collector’s item” that is also functional and fast.
I’m pretty set on equipping it with 8sp ~1992-93 Campagnolo C-Record, but in planning I’m finding the shifters to be a point of contention. I have read that Campagnolo indexed Syncro/Syncro II shifters are not very good, even when you match them with the right derailleur. I do want to use the original Campy shifters even if they’re friction, but I’ve read that some bar-end shifter mounts like Rivendell’s aren’t compatible with that era of Campagnolo. Why would that be? What are my options for shifters?? I’ve been a track bike mechanic for a long time now so I’m new to shifting. The frame has cable guides on the downtube.
I’ve also had thoughts of putting on the Campy Ergopower integrated shifters. It’d be a cool solution, but with the way brake levers/handlebars fitted together in this era of TT bike, I don’t think the thumb shifter would be very accessible at all (see photo of similar bike style for reference). I guess my question is, what are my reasonable and functional and elegant solutions? Thanks in advance!
