On September 21, 2025, the Mediterranean city of Toulon was paralyzed by torrential rains that unleashed one of the most disruptive floods in recent memory. In just 18 minutes, gauges recorded nearly 55 mm of rainfall, while totals reached almost 99 mm in three hours, overwhelming drainage systems and turning streets into rivers.

Entire neighborhoods were submerged, cars stranded, and Toulon’s tunnel flooded and closed in both directions. The city’s main railway station also shut down, leaving commuters trapped as buses and trains were suspended. By nightfall, nearly 15,000 households lost power, while firefighters carried out more than 160 emergency interventions, rescuing families from basements and stranded vehicles.

Neighboring towns including Sanary-sur-Mer and La Seyne-sur-Mer were hit just as hard, with shopkeepers wading through knee-deep water as storefronts filled. Social media flooded with images of submerged cars, lightning over the harbor, and streets transformed into torrents.
