“I ride Liège–Bastogne–Liège for some brutal climbs”
In this second episode in Belgium, Chris continues his cycle training for the Flanders sportive that’s coming up in a couple of weeks. The first day of training in Belgium was full of learnings and pain, will the second day be the same?
we continue with marvellous blue Skys and crips autumn air, the perfect cycling conditions for pushing out some good watts on the bike, all powered by a back pocket full of Belgium waffles!

come on then chris let’s have it what give us your best oh so welcome to wonderful frank horsham a kilometer down the road is the famous spa hong kong circuit we’re not starting from there because there’s a bit of a hill so tim was looking uh kind enough in fact to allow me to start just at the crest of the hill straight into a descent which is great you’re going down there down there any more questions for me i feel it i mean i’m eating a street waffle prior to riding that should tell you everything i’m in need of much morale need a poo a little bit no it’s not nervous though it’s not nerves 92 kilometers of belgium roads roads are you ready a bit louie all right then let’s see how these legs are going just abnormal legs i don’t need good legs i don’t need good form i just need normal legs oh the guy behind us [Music] lovely oh my god it’s the first climb [Music] 4.2 k 4.2 yeah average things put some warm look by top of this then already off out foothill vibes is that a ski run over there i was thinking that but i’m thinking it’s march now yeah it should be covered shouldn’t it should be at least got a bit of snow [Music] 110 meters of climbing in his natural habitat on the side of the road with a large amount of camera equipment he may have been here for days weeks or even months waiting to capture mr all right the plan is to be a bit more positive about this ride three climbs down there’s still like uh ten to go i think so we’re following the last four climbs of liege bastogne lies we’re heading to liege now uh that one that we’ve just done the radon i don’t know that’s the second to last climb at least we’ve got one more coming up which is a funko um yeah that when the pace is slow it’s better yeah i don’t i can’t even i couldn’t begin to explain what it is that’s that’s happening in my legs but my effort and level of exertion is not condu no not it’s not lining up with what i’m seeing the numbers i’m putting out i know where my heart rate should be i know my legs should feel that’s not happening it’s like i’ve just got a such a lag a level of fatigue in my legs that the moment i go beyond threshold everything just tightens up but that’s indicative as to what we’ve seen for the last probably two or three weeks now uh which is really frustrating because i should start feeling a bit fresh and i should start feeling like what can you do bridge sweet fa get on with it oh cold yet no i’m all right now let’s see how long we can give it 300 1.5 to the top 120 meters three [Applause] yeah this is the one where there’s a full motorway next to it and there we go like four feet and a half i think it’s another one of those times just smacked out right in front of you yeah there he is go deal with it i kind of like that though i don’t like being surprised when you’re thinking near the top yeah i agree with that there’s plenty of them in the alps when we went i’ll be honest there’s not a lot to write home about here oh really over there it’s a climbing liege yeah steep hill there’s a nice view to the right it’s that big bridge it’s a time in the age of it still got 1.3 to go second to last big climb that’s a bit more spicy mommy louie i found something to write home about 14.3 into 12.3 into 14.3 10.2 the speed they do it now ah so how far is this one uh this section of it is 1.1 at 11. it’s a bit we’re doing yeah right too short yeah but it peaks out like 17 i think it’s nice to put a bike lane on the right hand side to pretend as if you wouldn’t be using the whole road to get up it goes round to the left up here and that’s a steep bit where kara has tried to go a couple years ago 1k to go 116 meters still to climb going for an in-saddle approach nice to see you’ve gone for the uh pogo char tufts in the helmet as well yeah section of 11 now [Applause] come on 14 now 500 meters to the top steepest section here go on chris one last kick up after this bit here’s louie here’s the boy and honey that’s it come on come on 200 minutes to go [Applause] [Applause] thank you [Music] it’s having a little break we’re uh changing cameras and uh chilling and knowing just um arrived at the top of the photo by the first part of it is that right tim to do a bit more at the liege uh yeah we’ll go back down now and then he’ll go back up and are we doing that as well no all right we’re turning left i like it gear links links and louis arrived the family’s all back together and no one’s cried yet you’re back oh oh how was your ride compared to yesterday much better we did nine no we did 10k less than yesterday but we did the same amount of climbing and i think the climbs were a little more brutal today in my opinion the roads were grippier tim was leaving it all out there he uh he left no prisoners see did he half wheel you again four wheel i mean check the footage out i can i’m sure you can find at least two hours of footage of him just half wheeling me let me only roll for two hours no i did three hours twenty oh but yeah it was good it was good it was all right i cracked right at the end with about 13k to go there was like loads of these little ramps and we were like hitting them at 40k and i was doing all right and then one of them just got me that was it what happened i just went boo out the back hey everybody make sure you like and subscribe to this channel because it’s some of the best cycling content you

  1. That video angle made it look like Tim was riding sideways. 😹 I was sure you would be tagging the road with your name at some point. Great vid and keep up the good work.

  2. Nice one Chris, a few brutal climbs there. With regard fitness, daft question and without getting all political about it, but have you had covid at all. I ask as a couple of the lads I know have had it and they reckon they were not quiet as strong on the bike and were getting fatigued sooner. Took a while to get back to full fitness. Just a thought.

  3. Nice one mate! If you've had the C bomb, that really could be it. If not, there is research out that cooler temperatures and breathing cold air can give you these issues, particularly as blood vessels constrict and limit breathing. This would also alter your heart rate for a given effort. Something to think about innit. Anyway, keep it up, well jealous!

  4. Coming home from my ride today got to a straight section of road on my estate, cars parked all down my side of the road against the curb. Plenty of room for me to ride down without going on the opposite side, woman rolls window down to have a go because I didn’t wait for her like I would if in a car. Was I in the wrong? Didn’t feel like i was 🤷🏽‍♂️
