► Cyclists can now enjoy a new 800-mile cycle route which takes in some of northern England and Scotland’s most beautiful spots.

The Great North Trail ventures through moorland and rolling hills and was built because of a demands from cyclists for greater access to the countryside.

  1. Describing the route as a "safe alternative" for people new to cycling ignores the fact that sections of the route are quite technical and probably not suitable for novice cyclists.

  2. Amazing, if it’s almost all off road that’s an incredible feat. It’s now on my wish list. Just have to work out how to get to Scotland with my bike, and if we came in a car, how to get back to the beginning. Do any trains let you take your bike onboard in Scotland?
