The Palace of the Popes in Avignon, France is the world’s largest Gothic building. Constructed in 1300s, this palace ranks among the most-popular sites in all of France. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, powerfully built like a castle.
In 1309, faced with the turmoil in Italy, Rome, the eternal city no longer had a pope. A newly elected official settled permanently in Avignon in 1316. Two pope builders had the palace built in less than 20 years. The monument was the most important Gothic palace in the Middle Ages. Seven popes occupied the palace before the papacy moved back to Rome. But the palace in Avignon remained property of the papacy until the French Revolution, when it was seized by revolutionaries. In 1403, the last Pope Benedict XIII managed to escape from the besieged palace. It was the end of the papacy in Avignon.
