Broke a drive side spoke 30km into a 150km ride today. I only realised the spoke was gone at 60km when the spoke nipple rattling around inside the rim warranted inspection.
Bike is a Grail CF SLX 8 and wheel is the Zipp 303 firecrest shod with a 40mm Schwalbe G-One R. The rim went out of true but not enough that the tyre would rub the frame. I had been considering putting a 45mm on the rear wheel but a broken spike would have ended the ride potentially in the middle of nowhere with no mobile reception and a long walk out.
The wheel held up very well today and the tyre clearance was a blessing I had not considered before.
