Did you know that it’s possible to travel all the way from the North Sea to the Black Sea via two of Europe’s major river systems, the Rhine and the Danube. The earliest known attempt came from Emperor Charlemagne in 793. This route was made possible by connecting the tributaries via a 2 kilometer canal, from the river Rezat to Altmühl which connects to the Danube. Whether or not this project was completed remains unknown. The construction of the modern canal was completed in 1992 and is 171 kilometers long. Separating at Bamberg as the Main continues to snake eastwards, the canal takes a southward path through Nürnberg. Making use of the path of the river Altmühl, it reaches Kelheim where it connects with the mighty Danube. Thus this marvelous feat of engineering and diplomacy connects the city of Rotterdam all the way to the Black Sea and all its major ports. Please subscribe for more videos.
