Well, there’s a nice view from starting the morning. Are we in Huddersfield or whereabouts are we at the moment? Ah, welcome to Huddersfield. So, I’m in Huddersfield. As I said a couple of weeks ago, it is hill climb season and for a change, I am actually competing in one. I’ve come out here to do the Jackson Bridge Hill Climb because why not? And because well, I got invited by Russ and Aki. They all said, “Why don’t you come and do it?” I thought, “You know what? What the hell?” But I’ve come over a day early and I’ve stayed with Nick, who you have met before. Um, we’re going out to do a little wrecky of the hill now. Out for a little morning, a morning jaunt. Just go and have a ride around. Get the legs warm. I’ve not been on my bike for 6 days. It’s appalling, I know. I’m sorry, but uh going to go out and have a have a couple hours out, go and wrecky the hill, go for a brew, and then head back there in a while. So, uh yeah, get out and get some morning views. HQ down there. Can’t believe I’m right. There’s a swear word on it. That’s the whole idea. Let’s have a wrecky, shall we? A nice a happy slow easy wrecky. If I remember correctly, it’s 1,510 m. I think it’s 356 or something meters of climbing. That’s just over 1,000 foot, isn’t it? It’s not to be sniffed at. I think it’s been used on the Nationals this as well, hasn’t it? Now, according to Russ, I should be aiming for 7 minutes. So, we’ll see. Okay, little hair pin. Get to choose to ramp up it if you want or be sensible. It looks like we’re leveling off quite a bit here. We got some views. Nice. Don’t think I’ll be looking at them later, though. Say hello to the sheepsies. Gorgeous, isn’t it? That’s nice, ain’t it? [Music] Desperate for a L. [Music] This is a kicker to finish, isn’t it? This will sting. And that is Jackson Bridge. Well, that’s not a bad view at all, is it? to be greeted with after you’ve uh had to breathe in all of the air from the world after that. So, in 5 hours that again, but hopefully at least 2/3 the time. Here we have to sign on. Who’s this [ __ ] house that made the start sheet? Put me 55. Well, it could have been worse. How are you doing, buddy? You’re well. Soon as I Here’s your man. First away. My legs are shaking. Heart rate’s gone up five. Up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up. Go on, fell. Right, I’m going to go and get down there. Good luck to all of these guys. on [ __ ] Doing a little warm up before we get moving. Although I’ve got like an hour and a bit. I’m here with this pillock. Hello. It’s his fault again. And do that in poster car back. But yeah, Russ is away about half an hour before me. So just going away 15minute warm up again. Then I’ll probably have to do another another warm up in a bit. You’ll be used to these around here, won’t you? Already it once this year, have you Well, enjoy. I’ll try. What am I doing? You just head uphill as quickly as I’ve never just keep pedling. Been in this position before. Never even rode a hill before. Get up there, lad. Three, two, one, go. That’s up there. Come on. Get in there. 14 minutes to go. My legs feel dead. 5 4 3 1 right you lovely lot. Um I was going to do a overlay of elevation power this that and the other on this. Uh but as you’ll see I am farting around with Moahu because I missed the first few seconds on this. So you’re not getting it. I’m sorry. Um yeah, first hill climber. It’s tough. Tough. It wasn’t quite as bad as I was expecting. Although at the end you’ll see I was utterly knackered. So instead of having the overlay, I’ve set the camera up so you can see my current wattage. I set off relatively conservatively uh around 550 watt. And you can see it’s spiking here like 600 this. This is the steepest part here. But heck, you’ll see as I get further up it I have to back off. As I’ve mentioned, hill climbs are exactly the opposite of what I’ve been training to do for the last what, three and a half years. I’ve been training to keep my walk as low as possible, my heart rate as low as possible for as long as possible as opposed to going all out for Oh, legs feel dead. 6 and 1 half, 7 minutes. Yeah, literally a minute in and I’m dying on my ass already. I’m going to let this roll through and uh you can keep watching and I’ll comment if necessary. So, I’m having a little bit of a break. I’ve dropped it down to 300 and something w thereabouts and under occasionally just trying to claw anything back. [Music] This is the long steady section. Now, I can’t remember what grade this is. I don’t show the grade on my Wahoo anymore. I don’t care. I was actually aiming for a 400 W average on this um on based on what Russ had said. Um, he said 6 and 12 minute. Well, he said sub 7 minutes. That was my initial plan. I had no idea what to go for. You see, my average watch is down to 403. Now, granted, that will be out because I missed the first few seconds where I would have had a higher output. Perfect day for it, though. Look at the weather. It’s gorgeous. [Music] [Music] So, I can see ahead halfway point where the uh the marshals are. My friend Nick was there. I was one of them. I’ll just have a couple more seconds on the lowown and then start start putting some effort in again. Here we go. Stand up. I prefer to stand when I climb. I’m back up towards 450 500 watts there. [Music] There’s Nick. Hi. Yeah. Back in. Just get seated. Cheers, Mom. At this point, I thought, “Oh, I can’t remember how far it is.” I’d only been up here the once, obviously, so I couldn’t remember exactly how far it was to go. [Music] Jesus Christ. Yeah, the lactic was starting to build up here. So, first time I dipped under 300 watts there, I’m thinking, “God almighty, Scott, you’re dying. What are you doing? Just get on with it, you absolute. Yeah, whatever. The water is still dropping. as usual. Support’s brilliant [Music] now. Now I can see where the top is. So I know there’s a little bit of level coming up. I can just have literally a couple of seconds rest bite. So I just push on, push on, push on. I know I was going to give it a bit of a go this to see if I had anything left. I mean, I didn’t, but [Music] look at that down. 260 W. That’s just as shocking. I thought I’ll build it back up. I’ll build it back up. Let’s get around this corner. [Music] Right. Last ramp. Come on. Let’s get to where I can see. Yeah. Back out the saddle. When you can see the finish, you get to go. We’re building up. Building up. 450. 460. There’s the farm to finish. pack down a torch. I was dying here. The legs are nice. Here we go. Crowds are coming. [Music] Get back on those hoes and start pumping. on push push go on. And I had a decent amount left in the tank. It wasn’t a huge amount. It was just under 700 W. Pretty crap really, but there you go. Bango over the line. Whatever the hell bango means. Jesus Christ. That was brutal. We can stay there for a bit. Wow. It’s hard work, isn’t it? Come back. [Applause] Remind me again why you do this. That uh defies your logic, doesn’t it? Cuz I’m not used to this. I still have a bit left at the end. Yeah, I’m just in reserve. I was under me target number, but I didn’t record the first 30 seconds, so it might be about there. [Music] Come on. Come on. Nice DJ now. Come on. Go. Come on. Come on. Come on. [Music] Upgrade. [Music] I thought I pressed record as it was coming up and I don’t press stop unless you won’t stop. Press stop and then press record. As I’ve said, the worst YouTuber there is in the world. Only starts to record before he goes uphill. You’re concerned it’s 360. It’s easier for processing. All right. Okay. Is this screen on both sides? No. No, just the one. No. Might as well keep it running now. So, this is how you do YouTube. Press record and you press record. But make sure it’s got the red button. This red one. Yeah. And then you start shouting, “Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. [Applause] [Music] There we are. 631. 631. There you go. That’ll do. Your first ever first ever time. Well done. Good job. Well done. 631. Specializ. Okay. Yeah. All right. Behind you. Come on. Come on. Go on. Come on. Come on. Have it. You’ve done well there. So, yeah, me and Russ have just got our times. Thanks for coming. He’s got 632.1. I’m 631.2. How is that a second? Awesome job. Well, you said six and a half minutes, didn’t you? Yeah. Yeah. And I thought, [ __ ] That’s not Yeah. When when I said it, I thought, yeah, I was saying for weeks, yeah, going to get as close to six as I can, but then the other day I had a realization that that’s probably a bit too much. And it’s weird looking at camera that and then I’ve done it. I’ve done it. Okay, that means it would be about 420 watts with it. Just under a second between open. [Applause] Well, there you have it. Jackson Bridge Hill Climb complete my first competitive one. Uh, I didn’t hang around too long afterwards. I chat with a few people, disappeared. This is a couple of days later. Summary. Love the event. Really, really love the event. Um, but I was a mixture of really pleased I’ve done it. Bit disappointed with the results despite having put out my highest ever 5minute power. Um, but that’s no real surprise because all I’ve ever done for the last 3 and 1/2 years since getting into decent shape is save my what? Endurance riding. There’s never been an allout attack on something as short as that. My allout attacks have been something like out of the Swift where there’ve been 50 minutes of pain. So, you’re just having to tell it back a bit and I really had to I I struggled to work out how to pace myself through that. I left a bit too much at the end. Still really enjoyed myself and I’m going to be building for the future. Uh yeah. Yeah. Really enjoyed it. I’m going to be doing more. Um, I mean, yeah, I I need to do a lot more training. I mean, it just look at what Russ has done. Amazing. It was only just under a sec. It was 0.9 of a second behind me, which is wonderful. I’m so so proud of him. So made up for him. He’s done a lot more training of this ilk. A lot of high intensity efforts with the racing and stuff. Um, so he’s a bit more prepared for it. By his own admission, he says that. Um, for me, I’d happily go back up there again not long after. You know, I’m endurance. I’m trying to transition. So, I’m going to take a queue out of Russ’s book and train much like that and just bury myself. I don’t do that enough and I need to get my heart rate zones working. Well, no, I need to train in the higher heart zones more instead of just holding back all the time, which is basically what I’ve been doing for the last three and a half years. It’s just an excuse to not try hard, isn’t it? So, yes, I hope you’ve enjoyed that. I’m uh yeah, going to prepare myself getting some more done next year. Um it’s, you know, 7 months to the Fred, 8 months till I get to the Alps. That’s in the back of my head. Well, no, it’s in the front of my head. And doing stuff like this is going to help me alongside the base endurance that I’ve already got. I hope you’ve enjoyed this. Uh I really loved it. I’m looking forward to more in the future. And I will uh I’ll see you again on the next edition. Love you lots. See you later.
