Day 1 bikepacking the length of the UK from John O’Groats to Lands End – and a lot of places in between – was a pretty chill day. We did zero training for this endeavor so knew we needed to ease into this to prevent injury and saddle pain. We also needed supplies so biked to a nearby town and stocked up for some remote cycling ahead on some of the bikepacking trails in the Scottish highlands.
The beachfront campsite was lovely but we bought some new gear recently that hasn’t been tested in cold climates and the 32 degree Fahrenheit sleeping bag quilt Liz bought was no where near warm enough despite the nighttime temperatures in the 40’s. So it’s been some very cold nights 🥶
This is day one of us bike packing the length of the UK. We started the morning at this beautiful campsite right on the coast. Before setting off, we had a very large Scottish breakfast at a nearby cafe. And of course, we had to get our picture by the sign. We then decided to be a bit extra and bike in the opposite direction to the most northeasterly point in mainland Great Britain. Then we finally set off. We passed by so many sheep and some cows on mostly empty country roads to the town of Therso, where we stocked up on supplies for the next several days as we prepared to head into more remote areas. Then called in an early night at another beautiful beachfront campsite where Liz almost froze to death in her 32°ree quilt, which apparently is not warm enough for Scotland in the spring. And that’s all for the day.

Welcome to the UK!
See you when you pass my house….🏴
Do y’all like the blood pudding???
It's nearly always cold in summer in Scotland.
You need arctic gear!
