Over the past two years, underpasses in Stevenage have been undergoing a makeover.
A partnership between Stevenage Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council, and funded by the Stevenage Development Board through the UK Government’s Towns Fund, has transformed spaces throughout the town with urban artworks and improved lighting, creating colourful and welcoming pathways. Celebrating all that is good about Stevenage – from Stevenage Football Club, to achievements in STEM, cultural and ethnic diversity and artworks from local schoolchildren, the artworks showcase the rich tapestry of arts and culture in Stevenage.
Underpasses are used by pedestrians and cyclists, who benefit from one of Stevenage’s key assets – over 45km of traffic-free cycle network – and they will form part of an arts and heritage trail for Stevenage. Known as the Stevenage Heart Trails, this initiative will allow everyone to explore and discover hidden art and heritage across the town. A number of trails, all signposted and accessible by walking or wheeling, will start to be installed over the coming months, encouraging a journey through Stevenage to uncover artworks that have helped to shape the town.
Arts and culture are a cornerstone of the town centre transformation programme, with bright and colourful public realm features celebrating the communities that make Stevenage great.
