Welcome to the Christmas Market in the beautiful medieval town of Heidelberg in Germany ! The Christmas Markets in Heidelberg spread across multiple locations in the city. We will start this walk from the Christmas Market in Marktplatz. Heidelberg, located 78 km (48 mi) south of Frankfurt, is considered as Germany’s oldest university town. The stalls in the Christmas Markets sell delicious festive food and drinks. Some stalls also sell handcrafts made by the artists. As well as the traditional wooden stalls, the market also includes a ‘Fairytale Winter Wood’ and an ice-skating rink. Here they sell candied almonds (gebrannte Mandeln in German), which are served at every Christmas market throughout Germany. They scent of them is simply amazing on a festive night. Here you can see a small extension of the Heidelberg Christmas Market. A popular landmark and a tourist spot, Kornmarkt is a beautiful square situated in the heart of Heidelberg. The Christmas Market in Heidelberg opens yearly at the end of November and lasts until the third week of December. The most famous festive drink sold at the European Christmas Markets in general in Mulled Wine (Glühwein in German), which is a hot wine mixed with some festive spices. Here you can see Perkeo, the symbol of Heidelberg, perched on top. The Heidelberg Christmas Market is one of the oldest and most charming Christmas markets in the country, which dates back to 1712. It features over 170 stalls. The Church of the Holy Spirit (German: Heiliggeistkirche) is the largest church in Heidelberg, Germany. It was constructed between 1398 and 1515 in the Romanesque and Gothic styles. Hauptstraße, the main street in Heidelberg, is one of the longest pedestrian zones in Europe, spanning about 1.6 kilometers. Hauptstraße dates back to the Roman times and retains a historic charm with its Baroque architecture and narrow cobblestone streets. Hauptstraße is lined with a diverse range of shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists. Walking along this side street will take to the Neckar river. In 1885, the first Heidelberg horse-drawn tramline was opened along the Hauptstrasse. The Hauptstraße was later officially pedestrianized in 1978. Until its closure to through-traffic in 1969, the Hauptstrasse was an important route for motor traffic and a two-track tram. Here is the main square for the Heidelberg Christmas Market (Universitätsplatz). It is located between the buildings of the Old and New University. The Universitätsplatz (“University square”) was previously known as Paradeplatz, Ludwigsplatz. The tallest structure that you see here is called the Weihnachtspyramide (Christmas Pyramid in English), which is a tower found at almost every Christmas Market in Germany. It will be illuminated later in the evening with some beautiful lights. Here you can get yourself some homemade delicious chocolate kisses, which comes in different flavors. Here they sell Churros, which is a Spanish pastry. It is often served with various sweet dips such as Nutella. Here you can get yourself the famous German Hot Dogs (Bratwurst in German). Here you can see a carousel which is more than a century old. It provides entertainment for the children. Here they grill the Bratwurst over an open fire. The Bratwurst is often served with Ketchup and Mustard. Now we will walk to the last extension of the Heidelberg Christmas Market on today’s walk. It is located at Bismarckplatz which is a the end of Hauptstraße.
