Rabbits on the move! Cycling trip on the Riviera in autumn 2025. Friendly “detour helper.” Good morning. The real part of our Riviera cycling trip practically begins today. About 10 km past the starting line in Montpellier, we reached the sea, and from now on we’ll be cycling approximately 1000 km east along this magnificent body of water to our destination in Florence. So far, we’ve spent three days traveling from Avignon to Montpellier , and today our destination is Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. We’ll be cycling in the Camargue all day. Hopefully, we’ll encounter some wildlife, but as yesterday showed, even the little surprises are fascinating. The cycle path from Nîmes to Montpellier was truly surprising , and that’s simply the advantage of our kind of cycling trip— that you can’t see the details. That’s exactly it! Good for a surprise every day. That’s how it is! On our cycling trip along the French and Italian Riviera. Bon voyage! The first leg in the Camargue was a rollercoaster of emotions. After a slight detour through La Grande Motte, the subsequent stretch along the salt flats was a true delight. However, the approximately 15 km on the dead-straight, relatively busy D58 were one of the most tedious sections of the trip, but unfortunately, there was no alternative! After the ferry crossing, it was just a short distance to the Pont de Gau bird park! The various water birds made us lose track of time. But in our destination, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, there was still some time for a first dip in the Mediterranean. Sand dunes—exiting them is no fun. Fish are dying. They couldn’t jump off— couldn’t get out. A feast for the seagulls! Today, finally, the Camargue as one imagines it. Salt lakes, a bird paradise, solitude , and all this on the route from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to Martigue. It’s absolutely beautiful here! Beautiful—solitude—calmingly quiet! Nothing to hear except the seagulls? That’s just great! He’ll probably say, “I’m so alone!” After this very idyllic stretch, we actually had to change the Komoot track for you. It led us onto what was declared a federal highway, but was in fact the shoulder of a motorway-like expressway. So that the absolutely meditative atmosphere of the Camargue wouldn’t suddenly turn into a heart rate of 200 for you , we took an admittedly somewhat winding alternative route through industrial areas! Bay of Marseille. In Marseille, the first day of rest and sightseeing was on the agenda. But we had arrived early enough to get an overview! In this rather hectic city, however, we only managed to do so to a very limited extent! Good morning from Marseille. The first week of our Riviera cycling trip is over. A week full of contrasts. I’ll just say Camargue and Marseille. It doesn’t get any worse. So, for our standards, this city is beautiful, but extremely hectic. From tomorrow we continue eastward , and if I read correctly, a magnificent mountain stage to La Ciotat awaits us . The weather is just changing a bit today, but it’s perfect for a rest day. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be nicer again. Bon voyage. Cheers. Even at the risk of being considered a philistine, I confess that the dragon formation show in the Parc du Prado truly fascinated me . Incidentally, the following day we’ll be tackling the Route des Crêtes mountain stage high above the cliffs. An absolute highlight of the trip! But more on that soon in Part 3! End of Part 2. To be continued!
