I just want to share my experience. I am a big fan of Ortlieb and use my bike either for commuting to the subway (2km) or the whole way to work (20km). So the Ortlieb Vario seemed the perfect choice. On the short distance as a backpack and on the long distance as bike bag. I decided to go for the newly released Vario lite (49 x 32 x 24 cm). It has different dimensions than the Vario (45 x 31 x 18 cm). And the best thing is that the commuter insert does fit! Not completely perfect but good enough… The commuter insert in s might fit even better. If anyone has experience it would be great if you share it.
