If you’re in Paris and considering visiting the Palace of Versailles, here’s what you need to know. Starting with how to get there, you can either call a Bolt, which is similar to Uber, take a bus, or the train. We had a weekly navig, so we opted for the train, which was a 50-minute ride from our hotel. Second, you need to book your tickets in advance. We went with the passport option. It was €32 and gave us access to both the palace and gardens. While most people will suggest going as early as possible to avoid the crowds, we booked the 1:00 p.m. slot. Yes, there was a crowd, but it was bearable. But I wouldn’t book any later than 1:00 so you have enough time to explore. We arrived to Versailles around 11:00 and stopped at Stray Bean. It’s a local coffee shop which is about a 10-minute walk from the palace. We jumped in line at 12:30 because you do not want to risk missing your time slot. Next, let’s talk about what you need to bring. It’s a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and breathable clothing. If you’re visiting in the summer, bring a portable handheld fan. It can get very stuffy inside and out. I’ll link some of my favorites in my Amazon storefront under Euro summer. Also, learn from our mistakes. We rented the audio guide on site for €5. Apparently, it’s available on their free mobile app, so make sure you download that in advance. What I don’t regret renting is the golf cart. The palace is a lot of grounds, 2014 acres to be exact. You can rent a golf cart for €42 per hour. It saved us a lot of time, and we were able to cover a lot of grounds, so make sure you bring your driver’s license. And lastly, visiting the palace and gardens is a half, if not full day trip, so make sure you’re planning accordingly.
